ADVENTURE TRAVEL FILM FESTIVAL 2020 LONDON PREMIER

Make the most of your visit to the show on Saturday 18th January and enjoy an immersive evening of independent adventure travel films curated by Austin Vince from the Adventure Travel Film Festival.

Premiering some of the best independent travel film shorts from across the adventure travel spectrum, the night concludes with a full-length film ‘Going The Distance’ by newlyweds Mike and Alanna Clear. The Clears will introduce their film and take Q & A’s after the showing.

Screening time: Saturday 18 January 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm in the Adventure Auditorium.

The London GT Branch are once again running the “‘The Globetrotters Travel Advice Centre” at the Adventure Travel show in London on 18th and 19th January 2020.

Now in its 24th year, the Adventure Travel Show is the UK’s only event dedicated to adventure travel, with 120 specialist adventure travel companies providing expert advice and once in a lifetime trips for people who like to travel outside of the mainstream, whether it be on small-group adventures, exclusive expeditions or solo adventures.

Our volunteer travel advisors can :-

  • Give general advice for anxious travellers making their first major trip.
  • Share in-depth knowledge of countries they have visited in the past.
  • Share current experience gleaned during recent travels.

The show is the UK’s only event that is dedicated to off the beaten
track experiences, featuring once in a lifetime adventures, wildlife
encounters, eco travel, remote discoveries and more.

Speaking this month we have:

1st. Jacqui Trotter – The Stans

Jacqui Trotter talks about her journey overland back home from London to Australia via the five stans: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

2nd. Gavin Boyter – Run the orient

Armed with a toilet trowel and a converted Mazda Bongo called Roxy, self-styled ‘ordinary’ ultrarunner, Gavin Boyter, embarks on his latest long-distance challenge: to run the 3400km from Paris to Istanbul along the route of the world’s most illustrious railway journey, the Orient Express.

And, despite work on Roxy having hampered his training programme, Gavin remains undeterred and plans to run through eight countries, to cross 180 rivers and to ascend 16,500 metres, through forests, mountains, plains and major cities – aided all the way by temperamental mapping technology and the ever encouraging support of his girlfriend, Aradhna.

En route, Gavin will pass through urban edgelands and breathtaking scenery, battlefields and private estates, industrial plants and abandoned villages, and on through a drawn-back Iron Curtain where the East meets West. He will encounter packs of snarling, feral dogs, wild boar, menacing cows, and a herd of hundreds of deer. But he will also meet many fascinating characters, including a German, leg-slapping masseuse, music-loving Austrian farmers, middle-class Romanians, itinerant Romanies, stoic soldiers, and boisterous Turks.

However, confined to the cramped conditions of Roxy, and each other’s company, Gavin and Aradhna’s journey is not only a test of the endurance and stamina required to put in the hard miles, but of their relationship, too. After all, if they can survive this challenge, they can survive anything. But will Gavin’s legs make it all the way to Istanbul, where he has planned a special surprise for Aradhna?

Born in Edinburgh in 1970, Gavin Boyter studied Philosophy and English Literature at Edinburgh University. He later studied at Sheffield where he gained a master’s degree in Film and TV Drama. Gavin has been a writer ever since he could hold a pen. In 2015, he wrote and directed the romantic comedy film, Sparks and Embers, starring Kris Marshall and Annelise Hesme.

He has written numerous screenplays, including the psychological thriller Nitrate (with Guy Ducker). He recently completed his first novel, Elena in Exile, a crime story about a Romanian single mother adrift in London’s colourful, and sometimes dangerous, Soho. An occasional runner until his midthirties, Gavin only became serious about covering long distances when he ran his first ever race – the 2005 London Marathon! His first book Downhill From Here: Running From John O’Groats To Land’s End was published in 2017.

3rd. Jon Lord – ‘Africa’s Forgotten Pearl’

What is it we can learn from a blind singer on the River Nile, Coffee with Pygmies or a lion with a limp?  Bumping down the dusty tracks of a remote corner of Uganda in an old 4×4, Jon explores the motivations into why we travel and how our sense of perspective and attitude to risk changes. After lots of unexpected discoveries and near misses with large wildlife, Jon discovers that there is a lot more to Uganda than just its checkered past – truly a hidden gem and one for the bucket list.

1st. Sarah Crofts  — Veedub adventures – travels with my daughter

When Sarah took her ten year old daughter Tabitha out of school and embarked on an epic road trip the only thing they knew for certain was they would head north whilst it was warm and south when it got cold, 382 days and nearly 28000 km later they landed back on British soil.

This is the tale of their epic adventure from the Arctic Circle to the Sahara desert.

2nd. Don and Eve MacPherson — Myanmar Revisited

We took in a brief itinerary of Yangon, then journeyed on to Maymyo to see the Hill Station. Then we went to British Burma. The journey continued to Mandalay cruising along the Irrawaddy river to old Bagan. Next stop, a flight to Inle Lake to visit local villages along the canals before returning to Yangon, and ending the journey in Singapore.

1st. Lindy Pyrah – Riding the Mauritania iron ore train

The Mauritania iron ore train is the true definition of a cult classic: an epic overnight train journey involving hopping on a freight wagon full of iron ore in zero comfort through a dangerous country while experiencing the amazing Sahara desert and night sky.

Lindy is a train journey enthusiast and a London branch Globetrotters committee member, she did the Mauritania iron ore train solo in January 2018 and would love to share her story of how she prepared, experienced and lived to tell the tale of this amazing journey. Normally desk bound for most of the year, Lindy tries to make the most of her small holiday allowance to undertake memorable adventures.

2nd.  John Brinkley  – the white South – the Antarctic wilderness

A geology lecturer, both on land and on cruise ships, John will present an illustrated talk on one of the World’s last wilderness, the Antarctic. Using his own material from recent visits, John will discuss both the geological history and natural scenery of this remote region.

1st. David Redford – A Baltic Odyssey

A journey to Riga, Vilnius, Minsk, Kaliningrad and Gdansk gave an opportunity to compare the post-Soviet states which have turned westwards towards Europe with those which have stuck with Russia, and also to study the relics of the Teutonic Knights, the Hanseatic League, the Polish-Lithuanian empire and the long struggle between Germany and Russia.

2nd. Pat Jones – a journey through Sudan

Pat Jones loves travelling and tries to have 3 or 4 holidays a year. This is An interesting journey through Sudan , with some very basic accommodation yet a variety of different accommodation types and Pat was able to meet up with lots of locals in Sudan (old north Sudan and South Sudan are now separate countries)

1st. Paul Gillingham –  freewheeling in Chile and Argentina.

Paul visits Santiago and Valparaiso in Chile, rents city bikes to sample the Argentine grape in Mendoza and explore tango, Evita and Maradona in Buenos Aires. He joins his two sons on a cycle-camping expedition around the lakes and volcanoes of northern Patagonia.

Now retired, Paul taught history in UK, Canada, Tanzania and Hong Kong before becoming a journalist and broadcaster, producing travel features from around the world.

2nd. Chris Prior  –   from Tangier to the Sahara by motorcycle

Together with 17 other motorcyclists I rode my Triumph Tiger through Spain to Morocco. From Tangiers we travelled over the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara at Merzouga.

The return route included dirt roads around the Todra Gorge. After a stop at Ben Haddou we travelled to Marrakech and then headed north back to the port of Tangiers. Six days were spent in transit through Spain and eleven in Morocco.
